How to determine your hardware address

About your hardware address

Each device has a unique hardware address, sometimes referred to as the physical or MAC address.  The hardware address of your device must be included in your computer’s network database record for Stanford’s data service to work properly.  You may use the following instructions to determine the address if you are asked for this information when ordering service.

Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Click (or search for) Control Panel.
  3. Click View network status and tasks (make sure View by is by category).
  4. Click Change adapter settings.
  5. Right-click the connection being used and select Status.
  6. Click the Details button under Connection. The MAC address is labeled under physical address.

Mac OS X

  1. Click the Apple menu on the menu bar at the top of the screen.
  2. Click System Preferences.
  3. Click the Network icon.
  4. Click Advanced. The MAC address is located under the Hardware tab.

iPhone and iPad

  1. Tap the Settings app.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap About.
  4. Scroll down and the MAC Address is under Wi-Fi Address.

Android

Note: The options on Android devices will slightly differ depending on how the manufacturer customized the device.

  1. Tap app drawer and select the Settings app.
  2. Tap the Wi-Fi option under Wireless & networks.
  3. Tap the menu button.
  4. Tap Advanced to open the Advanced Wi-Fi screen.
  5. You’ll find the IP address and MAC address displayed at the bottom of this page.

Chrome OS

  1. Click the menu button in Chrome.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click the name of the Wi-Fi network you’re connected to at the top of the Settings page.
  4. Click Wi-Fi network again.
  5. The MAC address will be located under the Connection tab.

Linux

  1. Click the network icon.
  2. Select Connection Information. The MAC address is labeled under hardware address
